Becoming carbon neutral

Town hall solar panels

Watford has declared a climate emergency and pledged to make the council net zero carbon by the end of 2030.

To support its commitment to sustainability, the council was awarded £3.2m government funding as part of the Public Sector  Decarbonisation Scheme run by Salix. It has been used to:

  • refurbish windows (decreasing energy transfer by 75%)
  • improve heating control
  • improve lighting and introduce cavity wall insulation (saving 166 tonnes of carbon)
  • install over 180 photovoltaic panels and storage (saving 24 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually)
  • redirect waste away from landfill (99% was redirected)

What has the worked acheived?

It will take 50% off our gas bill and 32% off our electricity bill each and every year.
