As part of the Tales of the River project, residents are invited to take part in a River 'Amble' with a difference – a guided cycle along the Watford Green Loop.
This 6.5-mile route takes in the rivers and green spaces surrounding Watford town centre, including the River Colne, a key environmental feature supporting local biodiversity and wellbeing. Participants will cycle at a relaxed pace with a break halfway through, making the ride suitable for all skill levels. Most of the route follows dedicated cycle paths, with only short sections at the beginning and end on local roads.

Dates and time: 10 June & 2 July 2025, 10am – 12pm
These ambles, hosted by our project partner Groundwork East, aim to encourage residents to enjoy Watford’s natural environment while raising awareness of the importance of our waterways and green spaces. The River Colne, which runs through the heart of Watford, provides vital habitats for local wildlife and contributes to the town’s climate resilience.
Participants are welcome to bring their own bike or hire a Beryl Bike or e-bike from the docking station at Watford Junction. Those wishing to rent a bike are encouraged to download the Beryl app and register in advance to avoid delays on the day. Further details on the Beryl scheme, including pricing are available here.
Cllr Ian Stotesbury, Portfolio Holder for Transport and Sustainability said: “Bringing together Tales of the River and the Green Loop is a brilliant way to showcase how our green and active travel projects can work together. This guided bike tour gives residents the chance to explore Watford’s stunning natural spaces, learn about the River Colne’s importance, and enjoy sustainable travel at a relaxed pace. It’s a great example of how we’re connecting people to nature while encouraging greener ways to get around town."
