Watford Council is excited to announce the launch of the #WorthSaving campaign aimed at helping residents to save money by reducing edible food waste.

Residents are encouraged to sign up for the campaign's newsletter to receive valuable tips on preventing food waste and keeping money in their pockets.  Watford is one of 11 partner authorities that make up the Hertfordshire Waste Partnership (HWP), with the campaign being implemented county wide by the HWP’s WasteAware Team.

The #WorthSaving campaign is an effort to combat food waste, an issue that has both environmental and economic implications. In the Watford, households throw away approximately 4700 tonnes of food each year, the majority of which is perfectly edible. This contributes to increased greenhouse gas emissions and unnecessary financial strain on families.

Along with our environmental partners Veolia, Watford Council will work to:

  • Provide residents with practical tips and strategies to reduce edible food waste, potentially saving them up to £720 per year.
  • Encourage residents to sign-up for the newsletter will which will give them informative content, including how-to guides, recipes, and best practices to minimise food waste, including the four steps to save.
  • Through the #WorthSaving campaign, foster a sense of community around the campaign's mission by residents sharing their success stories and participate in local events.
  • Collectively reduce food waste, asking residents to contribute to the reduction in greenhouse gases and the amount of edible food being thrown away.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “Food waste is a challenge that affects us all, from both an environmental and economic standpoint. Working as part of the Hertfordshire Waste Partnership, along with our environmental partners Veolia, we aim to engage residents in ways to address this issue collectively. Together we can make a real impact on reducing food waste in our community.”

Darren Harding, Senior Contract Manager, Veolia said, "Unnecessary food waste impacts us all and is something we can all tackle together. That's why we're proud to support Watford Council and the HWP with this campaign by hosting school sessions to raise awareness amongst the future guardians of our planet and at community events to deliver ecological transformation across the borough"

Residents are encouraged to sign up for the campaign's newsletter to receive valuable tips on preventing food waste and keeping money in their pockets.  The campaign is being run in partnership with Herts WasteAware.
