Growing opportunity for Watford residents as Cherry Tree Allotments set to expand

New allotment space is set to be created at Cherry Tree in a partnership between Watford Borough Council, Cherry Tree Allotment and Garden Association (CTAGA) and Watford Community Housing...

The expansion will transform land beside the former Mothercare headquarters — now redeveloped as Yeatman Court, delivering 145 affordable homes — into new, productive allotment plots. After Mothercare closed, the land was temporarily used for informal parking. From April, work will begin to convert the site into a thriving growing space, with completion expected in October.

The site has a long local history. The Yeatmans Sweet Factory was established there around 1918 and operated until the late 1960s, after which the premises became the Mothercare headquarters. In the 1970s, adjoining allotment land, then underused, was temporarily approved for parking and yard space during Mothercare’s tenancy, with the understanding it would revert to allotment use once vacated, which it has now done.

Watford is home to around 1,300 plots across 12 sites, and demand remains consistently strong. Waiting lists continue to demonstrate that residents value the opportunity to grow their own food, spend time outdoors and connect with others in their community. Nationally, there are on average more than 50 people waiting for every 100 plots, and Watford reflects that sustained demand.

Allotments support physical and mental wellbeing, provide affordable access to fresh produce, encourage sustainable living and create important habitats for wildlife. With plot rents remaining affordable, they offer an accessible way for residents of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy the benefits of gardening and food growing.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “This is a fantastic example of partnership working delivering real benefits for our community. We have strong demand for allotments in Watford, and we know how valuable they are, not just for growing food, but for wellbeing, sustainability and bringing people together.

“Transforming underused land next to Yeatman Court into new allotment space shows how regeneration can go hand in hand with creating greener, healthier neighbourhoods. I’m delighted to see this project moving forward.”

On behalf of the committee, Lesley Critelli, Chair of CTAGA, added: “Cherry Tree has always been about more than plots of land, it’s about community. We have a welcoming and active membership, and we regularly see how allotment gardening improves wellbeing and builds friendships. The expansion will allow more residents to experience those benefits and strengthen what is already a thriving site. We’re excited to work with partners to bring this new space to life.”

The project supports the aims of Watford’s Allotment Strategy, which highlights the importance of maintaining high occupancy, improving site quality and responding to local demand. Find out more at watford.gov.uk/get-involved/allotments
