Watford Borough Council, alongside environmental partner Veolia UK, is delighted to announce the return of its much‑loved free compost giveaway on Saturday 16 May 2025.
The compost has been generously donated by Envar West London Composting.
The annual giveaway is a chance for residents to embrace sustainable living, enrich their gardens, and be recognised for their continued commitment to recycling. Garden waste collected through the green‑lidded bin service has been transformed into high‑quality, eco‑friendly compost and now it’s coming back to the community.
Event details
- Watford Town Hall Car Park, Peace Prospect, WD17 3EX
- Saturday 16 May 2026
- 10am – 11:30am (or whilst stocks last)
This is a popular event and supplies tend to go quickly. Residents are encouraged to arrive promptly at 10am and not before as this may cause congestion. You may be asked to park up while loading takes place, and availability cannot be guaranteed for the full duration of the event.
The council and Veolia look forward to welcoming residents for another successful, sustainable and community‑spirited morning.
Residents will be asked to:
- Bring proof of address (e.g. utility bill or council tax statement)
- Bring your own bags and a shovel – residents are responsible for filling and transporting their compost.
- Only bring a maximum of two bags per household.
Please be advised that parking is limited, so please consider other transport options, such as car sharing if possible.
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “Our residents play a vital role in helping us create a cleaner, greener Watford, and this event is one of the ways we can say thank you. Every time you recycle your garden waste, you contribute to a more sustainable borough, and the compost giveaway is a great example of how those efforts come full circle.
“I’m also incredibly grateful to Envar for generously providing the compost, and to the Veolia team, whose hard work and organisation make events like this possible. I hope many residents will come along and pick up their free compost.”
Darren Harding, Senior Contract Manager at Veolia, said: “The annual compost giveaway with Watford Borough Council has become a highlight of our calendar. The event is a great opportunity for Watford households to see the circular economy in action, as the compost is made from their own garden waste. We take great pride in being a part of a cleaner, greener Watford through events like this, as well as providing essential recycling, waste collection, street cleansing and parks maintenance services.”
