Young creatives wanted to help shape Black History Month in Watford

Museum next gen

The Museum of Watford is launching Museum Next Gen, a free nine‑month paid‑bursary programme offering young adults aged 18–25 the chance to help shape the future of heritage.

Starting in April 2026, the programme gives up to eight participants hands‑on experience across museums, galleries, archives, libraries, and arts organisations. It is open to anyone curious about culture, history, or storytelling, whether museums already feel familiar or completely new.

Participants will receive practical training in curation, collections care, exhibition planning, public engagement, and visitor experience. Those who attend at least 80% of sessions will receive a bursary. Each participant will also complete two high‑quality creative or research-led projects to build their professional portfolio.

This year’s cohort will play a central role in developing the Museum’s programme for Black History Month 2026, producing a small-format digital output and a public event. Most sessions will be held at the Museum of Watford, with both fortnightly and monthly attendance options available.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “Young people can bring fresh ideas that help shape our town. Museum Next Gen gives them a fantastic opportunity to influence how Watford’s stories are told. This programme supports new talent and helps them get involved with the heritage of our diverse town. This is all made possible thanks to National Lottery players through The National Lottery Heritage Fund.”

Applications are open to those who live or study in Watford or within five miles of the borough and have an interest in cultural or community work. No previous museum experience is required. As this cohort focuses on Black History Month 2026, the Museum particularly encourages applications from young people with lived experience connected to Black culture and identity.

The Museum is committed to creating accessible pathways into heritage work and welcomes applicants from working-class backgrounds, Global Majority communities, LGBTQIA+ young people, and those who are disabled, neurodivergent, or without formal qualifications. Support is available for anyone facing practical barriers to participation.

Applications close at 23:59 on 20 March 2026.

Places will be confirmed by 13 April 2026, and the programme runs from April to November.
