Watford Borough Council is developing a new Housing Strategy for 2026 to 2030 and want to hear from residents, businesses and community organisations.

Watford Council is inviting residents and local stakeholders to share their views on the town’s draft Housing Strategy, which will guide housing priorities from 2026 to 2030.

The public consultation will run from 19 January to 6 March, with residents encouraged to complete an online survey and help shape how housing needs are met in Watford.

Housing is one of the biggest challenges facing the borough. High house prices and rents, strong demand to live and work in Watford, and limited land for development mean the council must make the best use of available resources to deliver a strong and fair housing offer.

The draft Housing Strategy is built around five key priorities:

  • Increasing the supply of affordable housing
  • Providing supported housing for residents with additional needs
  • Improving housing conditions and energy efficiency
  • Supporting growth and regeneration, particularly in the town centre
  • Ensuring Watford’s needs are reflected in Local Government Reorganisation in Hertfordshire

The strategy aims to address a wide range of housing needs, from families and workers to vulnerable residents who need urgent support.

Watford Borough Council wants to involve as many people as possible in developing the final Housing Strategy and Action Plan.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “The cost and availability of housing is one of the biggest issues facing people in Watford. Our new Housing Strategy is about making sure we plan properly for the future, increasing affordable homes, improving housing standards and supporting those who need it most. I strongly encourage residents to take part in the survey so their voices help shape the decisions we make.”

Cllr Jennifer Pattinson, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Wellbeing, said: “Watford is a great place to live, but we know housing pressures affect people in very different ways. This draft strategy sets out clear priorities for the years ahead, and public feedback is essential to getting it right. By sharing your views, you can help ensure the final Housing Strategy reflects the real needs and aspirations of our community.”
