Watford Borough Council can confirm that it will not be asking the Minister to cancel the elections which are due to be held on 7 May 2026...

Last week, the Minister of State for Local Government announced that the Government is "seeking the views of Council Leaders regarding their local capacity to deliver local Government reorganisation alongside elections". Depending on the responses, she may then make an Order to postpone next year’s elections.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “I believe these elections should take place. Democracy is important, and residents should have their say.

"Local government reorganisation means these are very likely to be the last local elections for Watford Borough Council. Residents should decide who has the honour of serving as Elected Mayor, and as one of their local councillors, in the final years of the council.”
