I wanted to provide an update following the shocking and saddening recent events – with the attack on a synagogue in Manchester and the arson attack at a mosque in East Sussex – deeply affecting communities across the country. It has been a tragic reminder of the importance of standing together against hatred and intolerance in all forms.
Sadly, over the past few days we have also seen concerning incidents here in Watford, with graffiti appearing at several of our local faith sites: the Imam Hussein Foundation Centre, North Watford Mosque, and the soon to be converted St Thomas Church. These acts are completely unacceptable and go against the values of respect and unity that define our town.
Hertfordshire Police have confirmed that an individual was arrested on Sunday 5 October on suspicion of religiously aggravated criminal damage following graffiti attacks at Mosques in the county.
The council is in regular contact with the Police, who are treating these matters with the seriousness they deserve. We continue to support the Police in their engagement with our communities, ensuring that those affected receive reassurance and practical support.
The Police have confirmed increased patrol activity and engagement at all mosques and synagogues during relevant times, as well as at other faith premises across the area, to provide further reassurance and visibility.
Our priority is to stand firmly with all our residents against hatred and division, and to ensure that Watford remains a place where everyone feels safe, welcome, and respected.
Please report any significant concerns directly to the Police. You can call the non-emergency number, 101, or report online. If there is an immediate danger, always call 999.
