Residents of Watford are being invited to take part in two free events this autumn, designed to give people the skills and confidence to help protect and celebrate the town’s River Colne.
. Delivered through the ‘Rediscovering the River Colne’ project in partnership with Groundwork East, the activities combine practical training with outdoor exploration, a unique opportunity to learn new skills and make a real difference to the health of the river.
River Colne Coffee Evening, Monday 20 October 2025, 6:30pm – 8pm at Watford Rugby Club
This relaxed and welcoming event is all about community, conversation, and new ideas. Attendees will receive a voucher on arrival for a free coffee, before hearing inspiring stories from current volunteers who are already helping to protect and improve the River Colne.
The evening will also feature an open discussion, giving everyone the chance to share what the river means to them and how they’d like to see its legacy continue. Whether it’s better wildlife habitats, improved access for people, or more volunteer opportunities, all ideas are welcome.

Riverfly Training, Tuesday 21 October 2025, 10am – 4pm at Knutsford Playing Fields
This hands-on volunteer training will introduce participants to riverfly monitoring – a vital way of measuring river health. Trainees will learn the ARMI method, how to identify key species, and what they reveal about water quality. Following online learning in August, the in-person session will cover sampling, analysing results, and staying safe by the water. Trained volunteers will then be able to take part in monthly surveys, helping track the health of the River Colne and protect its wildlife.
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: "Protecting and restoring the River Colne was a clear pledge in my manifesto, and I’m proud to see this work moving forward with the community at its heart. The Colne is a vital part of Watford’s history, identity, and environment. These free events are a great way for residents to get involved, learn new skills, and play their part in securing a healthier river for generations to come."
Councillor Ian Stotesbury, Portfolio Holder for Sustainability at Watford Borough Council said: "These sessions offer a unique opportunity for residents to take positive action for the River Colne while enjoying time outdoors. Whether it’s training to monitor water quality or helping to map invasive species, every contribution matters. Together, we can strengthen our understanding of the river, improve its habitats, and support the wildlife that depends on it."
Both events are free to attend, but spaces are limited, and booking is required. To find out more and register, please visit https://www.rivercolnewatford.co.uk/get-involved
