Watford Borough Council is excited to announce two brand-new heritage trails, following the River Colne.
The new additions come after the successful launch of the council’s free self-guided audio walking tours earlier this year in partnership with the popular guided walk app, TrailTale.

Since going live in May, the original trails have been downloaded and enjoyed by residents and visitors, offering a fresh way to experience Watford’s history through a mix of historic photographs, accessible storytelling, and local insight. The positive response has paved the way for these new River Colne routes, which showcase not only the town’s heritage but also its natural beauty and wildlife.
Available for free on the TrailTale mobile app, the River Colne North and South trails highlight landmarks, hidden gems, and stories connected to the river’s important role in Watford’s past and present. They join the existing town centre routes, which also feature stories from the council’s celebrated 100 People Who Made Watford project, recognising individuals who have helped shape the town and its vibrant community.
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: "The River Colne is an important part of Watford’s history and a beautiful feature of our town today. These new trails give people another fantastic way to explore and learn about it. I’m delighted our digital trails have proved so popular and I’d encourage everyone to download the app and discover more about Watford, whether you’re out walking or exploring from home."
Deputy Mayor of Watford, Cllr Aga Dychton, said: "Our history isn’t just about buildings – it’s also about the landscapes, waterways, and green spaces that have shaped our community. The River Colne trails connect our natural environment with our heritage, encouraging people to get outside while learning more about the place they live. I’m thrilled that so many people are enjoying these trails and that we can now offer even more ways to explore Watford."
