
Watford is set to open its doors to some of its most fascinating and historic places this September, as part of Heritage Open Days, England’s largest festival of history and culture.
Running from Friday 12 to Sunday 21 September 2025, the event offers a rare chance to explore hidden gems, enjoy behind-the-scenes tours, and discover remarkable stories, all completely FREE.
From churches steeped in centuries of tradition, to unique theatre tours and captivating local history talks, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

This year’s programme includes:
- Friday 12 September
- Guided tour of Holy Rood Church –Explore the stunning architecture and history of this landmark Catholic church.
- Friday 12 and Saturday 13 September
- A Tale of Two Histories – Guided tour of Pump House Theatre and Arts Centre – Discover how this vibrant arts hub evolved from a Victorian pumping station to one of Watford’s leading cultural venues.
- Friday 12 September
- Retail Trade in Watford 1914 – Historian Helen George will share her award-winning research on how Watford’s High Street transformed in the early 20th century. Helen, who has degrees in history and social history, has dedicated her work to uncovering Hertfordshire’s past. In 2023, she won the National Archives' and British Association for Local History’s 20s Streets competition for her research.

- Tour of St Mary’s Church - Step inside Watford’s oldest building, with a history stretching back to the 12th century.
- Friday 12 September
- Tour of St John’s Church - Discover the architecture and stories of this Victorian-era church in the heart of Watford.
- Sunday 21 September
- Backstage tour of Watford Palace Theatre –Go behind the curtain at this Edwardian theatre and learn what it takes to bring a production to life.
