Major investment proposed to transform Watford Leisure Centre Central

Mayor at Leisure Centre

Watford Borough Council is set to consider a proposal to modernise and significantly expand Watford Leisure Centre Central at its Cabinet meeting on 7 July...

The £3 million scheme — which would be jointly funded by Watford Borough Council (up to £2.5 million) and Everyone Active (c. £560,000) — would deliver a major upgrade of the facility to meet growing demand, as well as enhancing the facilities available and customer experience. The planned improvements include:

  • More than doubling the gym space, increasing from 70 to 120 stations
  • Two new large group exercise studios
  • A brand-new, larger spin studio
  • Refurbished and enhanced changing rooms
  • An improved reception area and ‘grab and go’ catering offer

These upgrades would make better use of existing underused spaces, including slightly reducing the size of the sports hall, which would result in the number of badminton courts going from four to three, while retaining a five-a-side football pitch. The cost of the investment will be covered by the enhanced usage.

Watford Leisure Centre Central’s sister site, Watford Leisure Centre Woodside, was recently recognised as one of the top five leisure facilities in England for the third year running — a testament to the high standards achieved by Everyone Active in partnership with the council. The ambition is that the Central site can now emulate this success.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “This would be a major investment in the health and wellbeing of our town. Watford Leisure Centre Central is a popular and well-used facility. These proposals would make the centre even better. With these improvements, even more people would be able to enjoy a first-class gym and fitness classes right in the heart of our town.”

Cllr Tim Williams, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services, added: “Our central leisure centre plays a vital role in helping residents stay active and healthy. The proposed improvements reflect positively what users have told us they want — more space, better equipment and greater access to group classes. This investment would ensure the centre continues to thrive and supports its long-term sustainability.”

Karl Miles, area contract manager at Everyone Active, said: “We’re proud to manage both of Watford’s leisure centres and are excited about the plans for Central. This upgrade would transform the facility, allowing us to meet the current and future demand while delivering an exceptional experience for our members. We’ve seen what’s possible at Woodside and believe the same can be achieved here.”

Subject to Cabinet approval, work is expected to begin later this year.
