Watford Borough Council honours Windrush generation with flag raising and community celebration

Windrush Day 2025

Watford Borough Council proudly commemorated Windrush Day (22 June) with a special flag-raising ceremony and a dedicated community event.

These events were held to honour the invaluable contributions of the Windrush Generation and their descendants.

On Friday 20 June 2025, the Windrush Flag was raised outside the Town Hall, marking a moment of reflection and celebration for the entire community. It served a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of those who travelled from the Caribbean to help rebuild Britain after World War II.

Following the flag-raising, Watford Borough Council hosted a private event for members of the Windrush Generation. The gathering provided a meaningful opportunity for attendees to come together, share memories, and be celebrated for their profound impact on the town.

The event also welcomed Museumand, The Museum of Caribbean Heritage, who joined to support the council in beginning its journey to collect oral histories from the Windrush Generation for the new Museum of Watford. Culinary delights for the occasion were generously provided by local businesses Kelly’s Caribbean Cuisine LTD, Manna Food, and Ngorlic CIC, ensuring an authentic and celebratory experience.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor., said: “Today on Windrush day it is so important that we continue to remember and celebrate the many individuals from the Windrush generation who have contributed so much to our town and to the country as a whole. Our British Caribbean community has played a vital role in shaping Watford into the vibrant and thriving town it is today. The diversity and strong community spirit that define our town are what make it such a special place to live.”

An attendee at the event said: “It was such a lovely event. I came to England from Jamaica in 1954 as a teenager following my husband’s dreams of a new life. It warms my heart to see Watford Council recognising the importance of celebrating our contributions to this country and to Watford. Reminiscing about our experiences has been truly special, and I look forward to sharing our legacy with the younger generations for many years to come.”

Windrush Day, officially recognised on 22 June since 2018, commemorates the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush at Tilbury Docks in 1948. This event marked the beginning of significant migration from Caribbean countries to the UK, with individuals answering the call to fill post-war labour shortages. Despite often facing immense challenges and discrimination, their dedication in sectors like the NHS, public transport, and industry was crucial to the nation's recovery and growth.

Watford Borough Council remains committed to celebrating the diversity of its residents and fostering a community where everyone feels valued and respected. This Windrush Day celebration was a testament to that ongoing commitment.
