Watford’s Green Loop wins LGC ‘Future Places’ award for connecting green spaces, promoting active travel, and blending technology, sustainability and community to shape a healthier, greener town.
Watford Borough Council has won the prestigious LGC ‘Future Places’ award for its pioneering Green Loop project – a 6.5km walking and cycling route that blends technology, sustainability and community involvement to transform the way people move around the town.
The award recognises outstanding place-shaping initiatives, and the Green Loop stood out for turning an ambitious vision into a reality that connects people with nature, supports wellbeing, and promotes active travel.
At the heart of the project was the Digital Twin – a 3D interactive model of Watford created in partnership with Hertfordshire County Council and Digital Urban. This virtual model enabled over 270 residents and to explore the Green Loop in virtual reality. Reaching a new demographic of Watford helped shape the final design and allowing the Green Loop to foster a strong sense of community ownership before the route even launched.
Already honoured with an RTPI Award for Planning Excellence, the Green Loop has redefined what sustainable, inclusive place-making can look like.
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “Winning this award is fantastic recognition of our commitment to creating a greener, healthier, and more connected Watford. The Green Loop was one of my key commitments in my 2022 election manifesto, after local cycle groups suggested the idea. This route encourages active travel and greener choices for our residents and we’re keen to make further improvements to it.
“The Green Loop is a great example of how we can improve our town together. A huge thank you to all the councillors, Council officers, local cycle groups, and the wider community who have worked hard to bring this vision to life.”
This national recognition underlines Watford’s position at the forefront of innovation in local government, setting a blueprint for other towns and cities across the UK.
