The council is celebrating significant progress for the town’s Transforming Travel in Watford strategy, marking a shift towards greener, more accessible, and inclusive transport options..
Since its launch in March 2024, the Watford Car Club has attracted 150 members, who have collectively driven over 22,488 miles. This initiative has resulted in a reduction of approximately 3617 kg of CO₂ emissions, the equivalent of around planting 165 mature trees. The club offers flexible, low-emission vehicle access, reducing the need for private car ownership in the town.
The Beryl Bike Share Scheme, introduced in March 2020, has also seen remarkable success. Since its launch, users have collectively cycled an extraordinary 1,509,456 kilometres—the equivalent of nearly 40 times around the Earth. With pedal and e-bikes offering a flexible, affordable alternative to car travel, this milestone demonstrates the growing appetite for active, low-carbon journeys across the town.
In terms of infrastructure, Watford has made significant strides in supporting electric vehicle (EV) adoption. At the end of 2024, the town recorded 392 public EV chargers, up from 209 the previous year—a remarkable 88% increase. This equates to 380 chargers per 100,000 residents, far exceeding the national average and reinforcing Watford’s position as a leader in EV infrastructure.
The council's commitment to sustainable travel is further exemplified by the Green Loop, a 6.5-mile continuous cycling and walking route encircling Watford town centre. Launched in November 2024, the Green Loop connects key locations, serene open spaces, and heritage sites, promoting eco-friendly transportation and physical activity.
Additionally, the Watford Shopper Bus Service, supported by the council, has become an essential service for residents facing mobility challenges. Since its launch in January 2024, the service has achieved over 740 bookings, providing convenient and accessible transportation for shopping trips.
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “These achievements reflect our commitment to doing everything we can to improve the local transport network. By providing a range of travel options, we're not only reducing our carbon footprint but also giving our residents more choices. We will continue to invest in initiatives that support our vision of a greener, healthier Watford.”
Councillor Ian Stotesbury, Portfolio Holder for Transport and Sustainability, said: “These achievements reflect a huge shift in how people move around Watford. We're enabling residents to make healthier, greener travel choices every day—choices that reduce emissions, improve air quality, and create a more sustainable town for future generations. It’s about giving people real alternatives that are accessible, affordable and better for the planet.”
