Watford marked the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day with a commemoration and flag raising at the Town Hall and Peace Memorial on Thursday 8 May 2025...
The ceremony was led by the Elected Mayor of Watford, who read the official VE Day 80 Proclamation, a national act of remembrance taking place in towns and cities across the country.
The event was attended by local school children from Beechfield, Cherry Tree and Laurance Haines, who played a key part in the commemoration by reflecting on the significance of peace and the sacrifices made by past generations. Their presence served as a poignant reminder of the importance of passing the legacy of remembrance to future generations.
Local dignitaries, veterans, and community leaders also gathered to pay tribute, with wreaths laid in silent honour of all those who served and those who gave their lives in the pursuit of freedom.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: "On this 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, we come together to honour the courage, sacrifice, and heroism of the many brave service men and women who gave so much in the fight for freedom. We remember the millions who suffered, the lives lost, and the victory that was so hard-won. Their sacrifices secured the liberties we cherish today. We honour them with gratitude and we shall never forget."
The commemoration forms part of a nationwide programme of events marking this important milestone in British history, reminding us all of the cost of war and the enduring value of peace.
