Free compost giveaway returns for 2025

Hands in compost

Greener days are ahead for Watford as residents get ready to roll up their sleeves this spring.

Greener days are ahead for Watford as residents get ready to roll up their sleeves this spring. Watford Borough Council and environmental partner Veolia UK are gearing up for the return of the much-loved free compost giveaway on Saturday 10 May 2025, which has kindly been donated by Envar West London Composting.

The event offers a great opportunity for the local community to embrace sustainable living, improve their gardens, and do their bit for the planet - all while being thanked for their ongoing recycling efforts.

To celebrate the efforts of residents who regularly use their green-lidded bins for garden waste, we’re giving back with a sustainability-themed giveaway! Your garden waste has transformed into rich, eco-friendly compost which is ready to be shared with the community.

This event will run from 10am to 11:30am at the Woodside Playing Fields Car Park (upper car park), Horseshoe Lane, Watford, WD25 7HH. Please be advised that this is a popular event, and the compost supply runs out very quickly. We would recommend arriving as close to 10am as possible, and we may ask you to park up. We cannot guarantee that supplies will last until the end of the event.

Residents will be asked to:

  • Bring proof of address (e.g. utility bill or council tax statement)
  • Bring your own bags and a shovel – residents are responsible for filling and transporting their compost.
  • Only bring a maximum of two bags per household.

Please be advised that parking is limited –so please consider other transport options, such as car sharing if possible.

Darren Harding, Senior Contract Manager at Veolia, said: “It’s great to be working with Watford Borough Council and Envar West London Composting on this giveaway, which we’ll deliver alongside the essential services of recycling and waste collection, street cleansing and parks maintenance we provide. The compost residents can pick up to enrich their gardens has been made from the garden waste collected from households across Watford by Veolia crews, showcasing a truly circular economy. Supporting events like this is just one of the many ways we’re proud to be part of a cleaner, greener Watford.”
