John Barnes and Colin Jackson joined Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor to officially open the refurbished leisure centres in the town.
Watford, Liverpool and England legend Barnes, who cut the ribbon at Watford Leisure Centre Woodside, spent time coaching children to take penalties, answering questions before performing his rap from England football classic World in Motion.
“The centre is fantastic,” Barnes said. “I was taught from my days at Watford with Graham Taylor to put back into the community by visiting school, charities and Leisure Centres.
“It’s good to see the investment that has been made into this Leisure Centre which will serve the community because it’s able to afford the opportunity to work out in fantastic facilities. The gym is one of the biggest in the south east of England and the equipment is second to none.”
Olympic silver medallist Jackson cut the ribbon at Watford Leisure Centre Central before setting ‘Beat the Olympian’ gym challenges, meeting the community and then testing his skills in a Bollywood dancing class.
“The facilities at Watford Leisure Centre Central are fantastic and I think the event was a great opportunity for the whole community to see what Everyone Active has been doing with the centre,” Jackson said.
“I got to try out the gym and the new equipment is state-of-the-art and I think the whole community will enjoy using it. I hope everyone enjoyed their day and I hope they go back to the centre soon.”
Watford Borough Council in conjunction with Everyone Active began the £1.8milion project to refurbish the two leisure centres in August 2018 and customers will now be able to enjoy larger gyms with state-of-the-art equipment, a brand new toning suite and new virtual group cycling classes.
At Watford Leisure Centre Woodside one of the new additions is the Toning Suite which is the first of its kind in the region. The Toning Suite includes a selection of power-assisted equipment for older people and those with additional needs. Alongside the Toning Suite, Watford Borough Council have also invested in a wheelchair weighing scales to increase the accessibility of the gym.
Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: "It is fantastic that we have been able to work with Everyone Active to deliver these improvements. We’re committed to having first class facilities but also ones that are affordable and accessible to everyone in our town. I want us to continue to have leisure centres that people in Watford can be proud of."
Gary Foley, Everyone Active contract manager, said: “I hope everyone that came along to the family open day had a fantastic time. It was great to have such sporting legends like Colin and John join us and I think the community loved meeting them both.
“I want to thank everyone for coming along to the centres and hope that they enjoyed the new look facilities.”
