Watford’s Green Loop wins prestigious RTPI Digital Planning Award

Green Loop Award 2024

This accolade highlights Watford’s progressive approach to urban planning, emphasising sustainability and technology integration to enhance the local environment.

Watford’s commitment to innovation and community engagement has earned national recognition as the Green Loop project was named the winner in the ‘Excellence in Digital Planning’ category at the RTPI Awards for Excellence in Digital Planning Practice.

The accolade highlights the borough’s pioneering use of technology to shape its urban landscape and bring ambitious projects to life. Developed in partnership with Hertfordshire County Council and Digital Urban, the Green Loop’s digital engagement efforts captivated over 270 participants during an immersive VR bike ride experience last year, hosted at Cherry Tree Primary School, Big Sports, and Oxhey Activity Park.

The VR bike ride allowed residents to visualize the Green Loop’s transformative potential in an interactive, engaging way. The overwhelming positive feedback reinforced the importance of digital innovation in making community projects relatable and accessible.

With the Green Loop now officially launched, Watford is not just celebrating an award-winning design but laying the foundation for a sustainable future. Enhancements to the project will continue over the coming years, ensuring it delivers long-term benefits to residents and visitors alike.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: "I am thrilled that our Green Loop has won an RTPI Excellence Award. This is a testament to Watford’s forward-thinking approach to urban planning and our dedication to engaging the community. The Green Loop represents our vision for a greener, healthier, and more connected town.

“A huge thank you to all the Council officers, local cycle groups, and the wider community who have worked together to make this happen. The Green Loop was one of my key commitments in my 2022 re-election manifesto – I am proud that this improved green loop allows greater access for people to walk and cycle around our town.”

Cllr Ian Stotesbury, Portfolio Holder for Sustainability and Transport, said: “Watford is committed to building a sustainable and connected future, and the Green Loop is a shining example of this vision. By embracing innovation and engaging with our community, we’re making active travel and greener choices easier for everyone. This national recognition highlights the transformative potential of projects like the Green Loop in shaping a healthier, more sustainable town.”
