The Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor officially opened Atria Watford’s new installation this week (29 June), supporting Proud Watford and the LGBTQIA+ community...

Located in the centre’s atrium, the multi-colour facia of the central staircase proudly boasts the LGBTQIA+ spectrum of colours for all to see and celebrate. The Mayor of Watford was joined by the Centre Manager, Simon Plumb at Atria Watford to cut a ribbon and mark the launch of the centre’s support for Proud Watford, a summer-long town initiative to support Watford’s diverse community.

Watford Proud is a celebration of Watford's LGBTQIA+ community with a week-long series of events, entertainment and activities between 13 and 19 August, right in the heart of Watford, and represents an on-going commitment to the community as National Pride Month comes to its close.

Simon Plumb said: “Throughout June we have highlighted the support our retailers give to Pride and we’re delighted to carry on our support for the coming months. We are honoured to be working with Proud Watford and to show support for the LGBTQIA+ community. It is important for Atria Watford to ensure our customers from all backgrounds and identities feel welcome and comfortable when visiting the centre. Proud Watford is a chance to come together, celebrate and understand the important role this community has in the future of our great town.”

Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: “There has been lots of progress in recent decades but there is still a long way to go before we can say that every LGBTQIA+ resident in Watford feels safe, valued and included.

“Pride has always known that the visibility of LGBTQIA+ culture breaks stereotypes, provides affirmation to those who are questioning their sexuality and gender identity, and tackles prejudice. I am pleased that we have such a visible display of our support for LGBTQIA+ residents in Watford and hope it contributes to improving LGBTQIA+ lives in our town.”
