Watford Borough Council has completed the first phase of streetscape improvements to enhance the look and feel of Queens Road, the popular and historic shopping destination in the town...

The enhancements from the High Street to the middle atria Watford entrance on Queens Road, has created an attractive and safe space at the heart of the town centre, providing a better experience for visitors to meet, relax, and enjoy. Over the next few months, similar improvements will take place on the other side near the Broadway subway entrance.

New granite paving, realigned street furniture, and a trio of new planters have been introduced to add greenery and new seating has also been installed to the area. Other improvements include new cycle stands, repainted fixed bollards, lamp columns, and repositioned litter bins.

A comprehensive scheme for the busy parade of shops, restaurants, and other businesses, the improvements have brought the aesthetics within Queens Road up to the same standards as the major public realm scheme completed nearby in the town centre in 2019.

The works are part of the council's phased improvement plan for various locations across the town, including King Street, Market Street, St Albans Road, Clarendon Road, and the Town Centre. Additionally, there will be a program of improvements for smaller parades across Watford.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “These improvements, supported by local businesses, have made the area more appealing for both residents and visitors, promoting local trade.

"As part of my manifesto, I promised to enhance areas like this so that businesses are supported and residents can feel proud of their area. Similar enhancements are being made in other areas including Garston parade, to make Watford a more desirable place to live, work and visit.”

Chris Luff, Chief Executive of Watford & West Herts Chamber of Commerce, who are based on Queens Road, said:

“The completion of the streetscape improvements in Queens Road has transformed the area into a vibrant and inviting space for visitors to meet, relax, and enjoy, truly bringing the aesthetics of the historic shopping destination up to the same standards as the major public realm scheme completed nearby in the town centre."
