Watford Community Housing and Watford Borough Council recently took another significant step towards combatting Watford’s affordable housing crisis, unveiling a large development of new family homes for social rent.

Situated on Raphael Drive, Luther Blissett House comprises 12 three-bedroom flats, 5 two-bedroom flats and a community hub which can be used by residents, local charities, youth groups and sports clubs.

Footballing legend Luther Blissett (DL)* met with Tina Barnard, Chief Executive of Watford Community Housing and Elected Mayor Peter Taylor to celebrate the completion of Luther Blissett House, which is the latest development in a £15.2m programme of 56 new homes for social rent in Watford.

Speaking at the event, Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: “It is so important that we have good quality and affordable homes for local families. I made a commitment to deliver these homes for social rent when I was standing for election. I am pleased that by working with Watford Community Housing, I have been able to deliver on this promise.”

Luther Blissett added: “When I was growing up in social housing, it was almost like a school uniform. No one was looking at what other people had and thinking of themselves, we all just looked after each other and that created a strong, caring community. That’s why I’m so proud to be given the opportunity to put my name to this – I hope these homes will bring their residents a sense of stability and community comparable to what I experienced.”

Tina Barnard said: “With living costs rising for people across the country, it is more important than ever that we continue to provide low-cost homes for rent. We’re proud of the dedicated partnership between Watford Community Housing and Watford Borough Council that is consistently delivering homes for local residents in need of affordable homes.”

Social rent is typically approximately half the cost of renting a similar property on the private market, and the Watford Social Rent Programme has been implemented by Watford Borough Council and Watford Community Housing to improve access to high-quality housing for all local residents.
