Museum on Tour Brings Victorian Christmas to Cassiobury Park

Christmas

Residents are invited to step back in time and discover how Christmas was celebrated in Victorian England at a special Museum on Tour event this November.

"Christmas with the Victorians" will take place at The Hub, Cassiobury Park, on Saturday 28 November 2026, from 11am to 3pm.

The Museum of Watford is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to deliver our ‘Museum on Tour’ events.

The free family-friendly event will explore festive traditions from the Victorian era through a range of engaging activities, including Victorian parlour games, Christmas-themed crafts and opportunities to learn about everyday life during the nineteenth century.

Visitors will discover how many of the Christmas customs still enjoyed today became popular during the Victorian period, while also exploring the wider social history of the era. Activities and displays will examine themes including social inequality, the impact of the British Empire on England, and the differing experiences of people living during Victorian times.

The event forms part of the museum's outreach programme, bringing local history and heritage into community spaces and making collections and stories accessible to residents of all ages.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “Christmas with the Victorians offers a fun and interactive way for people to explore local and national history. Visitors can enjoy traditional festive activities while learning about the realities of life during the Victorian era, from the traditions that shaped Christmas as we know it today to the wider social issues that influenced everyday life.”

The event is suitable for families, history enthusiasts and anyone looking to discover more about the origins of Victorian Christmas traditions.
