Residents are invited to celebrate Black History Month by getting creative, sharing their stories and contributing to a unique community artwork inspired by culture, heritage and identity.
The People's Patterns will take place at the Harlequin Centre on Friday 23 October, from 11am to 4pm.
The Museum of Watford is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to deliver our ‘Museum Nex Gen’ programme.
Museum Next Gen is designed to bridge the gap between museum theory and professional practice, giving participants hands-on experience in collections, curation, exhibition design, interpretation and public engagement. Through creative projects like this, participants play an active role in shaping how the museum connects with communities and shares heritage stories.
The free drop-in event will explore the rich history and significance of Afro-Caribbean textiles, including Kente cloth, Adinkra symbols and Ankara prints, while celebrating the stories, cultures and experiences that make Watford such a diverse and vibrant town.
Visitors will be invited to design a fabric patch inspired by their family, heritage, neighbourhood or personal journey and add it to a growing community tapestry. Beginning with a foundation of Afro-Caribbean textiles, the artwork will evolve throughout the day as residents contribute their own designs and stories, creating a lasting celebration of community and cultural connection.
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “Black History Month is a time to celebrate the stories, achievements and cultural traditions that have helped shape our communities. The People's Patterns is a fun and creative way for people of all ages to learn about Afro-Caribbean heritage, share their own experiences and become part of a community artwork that represents the many cultures and identities that make Watford special. We hope residents will come along, get involved and help us weave Watford's story together.”
The event is free to attend and open to all ages.
