PSPOs are designed to address specific issues that may negatively impact the quality of life within a designated area. They are a vital tool in maintaining the safety and family-friendly atmosphere of the town and the consultation aims to get the community’s insight to ensure they continue to be effective.

There is already a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) in place 24 hours a day, restricting alcohol consumption in public areas within the defined boundary, including parks, play areas, cemeteries, footpaths and other open-air public spaces.

This gives Police Officers, Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) and authorised officers the power to require individuals to stop drinking alcohol and surrender open alcohol containers, with failure to comply potentially resulting in a fixed penalty notice, court summons or a fine of up to £500.

Street parties and other community events where alcohol is consumed can still go ahead as normal. The PSPO is aimed at tackling anti-social behaviour rather than preventing responsible drinking, and individuals will only be required to stop drinking if asked to do so by an authorised officer.

The public consultation to renew the existing PSPOs starts on 14 October 2026 and will last for three weeks. It provides an opportunity for the community to voice their opinions about and suggestions for the PSPO.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: "We must make sure that Watford continues to be a safe and welcoming with lots of opportunities for residents and visitors alike to have fun. The PSPO will help to make sure that everyone can continue to feel safe and provide reassurance that we will take action against antisocial behaviour.”
