Following a year of design and technical development, improvement works are taking place at Oxhey Park, Riverside and Lairage Land.
Work is now underway at several locations along the River Colne as part of the Rediscovering the River Colne project, a long-term initiative to restore the river, improve habitats for wildlife and help people better connect with this important local natural asset.
The works form part of a wider 10-year programme to restore the River Colne and create a healthier, more resilient environment for both people and nature.
The project is focused on enhancing the river corridor by restoring more natural river processes, increasing biodiversity and improving public access to riverside spaces. By creating healthier habitats and improving access to the river, the project will help support local wildlife while providing more opportunities for residents to enjoy and engage with the natural environment.
Works taking place over the coming months include:
- Habitat creation
- Floodplain enhancements
- Tree and vegetation planting
- Fish passage improvements
- Riverside access improvements Residents may notice volunteers, contractors and machinery working on site while these improvements are delivered.

As part of the programme, residents will have the opportunity to get involved through a series of community volunteering sessions. These sessions will give people the chance to make a hands-on contribution to improving the river environment, support local wildlife and learn more about the River Colne and its importance to Watford's natural landscape.
