Grand Union Community Energy (GUCE), in partnership with Watford Borough Council, is exploring a new community solar share offer that could give local residents and businesses the opportunity to invest in a renewable energy project close to home.
Money raised would help install solar panels on local community buildings, generating clean, affordable electricity while supporting a greener future and bringing benefits to Watford's communities.
Community benefits could include support for local projects and initiatives, with income from the scheme helping to create lasting value for Watford. Community-owned renewable energy can also help deliver wider benefits through financial savings, social inclusion, economic development and environmental improvement.

Example of Similar Scheme
In 2013, GUCE successfully raised funds via a community share offer to install 46kW solar panels at a local school in Kings Langley. They also acquired the existing 4kW panel on the roofs of the same school. These panels deliver the school buildings with solar energy, which GUCE sells at a discounted rate. Together with the Feed in Tariff revenues, this income enables GUCE not only to repay its shareholders over time but to generate a community fund for other local initiatives.
They also generated "Negawatts" by supporting groups of neighbours to adopt energy saving measures, using the Transition Streets workbook developed by Transition Town Totnes and adapted for local conditions and resources.
