Project background
When complete the project will enhance connectivity between the Watford Green Loop and Watford High Street station, onwards to Watford Town Centre.
The Watford Green Loop is a 6.5-mile continuous walking and cycling route that encircles Watford Town Centre, and the planned works will improve the walking and cycling route between Local Board Road and Wellspring Way, along the western side of Lower High Street.
This project is being delivered in partnership with Active Travel England and Watford Borough Council.
The planned works will provide a key connector to employment, leisure and educational facilities and the retail parks, and make active travel to and from the railway station and town centre more attractive and accessible.
What is proposed
The shared-use walking and cycling path on the western side of Lower High Street between Local Board Road and Watford High Street station does not meet current design standards. Some sections have insufficient widths, so we plan to widen the shared-use path by reallocating road space.
The planned works include:
- Widening the shared-use walking and cycling path along the western side of Lower High Street
- Installing a continuous footway at the junction with Local Board Road to make walking along Lower High Street easier
- Installing a new parallel crossing near the junction with Watford Field Road to help people walking and cycling to cross the road
- Modifying the existing toucan crossing over Lower High Street, which is part of the National Cycle Network Route 6
- Installing new landscape planting and seating to enhance the urban realm
- Improving road carriageway surfacing and route signage
- Upgrading street lighting near Watford Field Road
Subject to community feedback, Hertfordshire County Council aim to carry out the construction work from early 2027
