The Museum of Watford is inviting residents to play a key role in its exciting future by applying for a new Learning & Engagement Volunteer opportunity, as part of its major redevelopment project.
The opportunity comes at a pivotal moment for the museum, which is currently undergoing transformation through the Re-imagine Watford Museum project, supported by a £2.4 million grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The new museum experience has been made possible by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, with thanks to National Lottery players.
Volunteers will support the museum’s Learning & Engagement team, helping to deliver interactive programmes that connect communities with Watford’s heritage. Activities will take place both within the museum and across the town through the Museum on Tour programme, including community events, festivals, school sessions, and family activities.
This is a unique opportunity for people aged 18 and over to gain hands-on experience in heritage, community engagement, and event delivery, while contributing to a major cultural project in Watford.
What volunteers will do:
- Support the delivery of engaging community programmes and events
- Welcome and interact with participants of all ages
- Assist with event setup, administration, and feedback collection
- Help prepare activity materials and explore the stories behind museum objects
No formal qualifications are required, and full training will be provided.
What volunteers can expect:
- A welcoming and supportive team environment
- Opportunities to learn new skills and gain valuable experience
- Access to unique local heritage collections
- Travel expenses covered for off-site activities
- The chance to make a meaningful contribution to the community
Volunteering is flexible, with opportunities mainly available on Fridays and weekends. Applicants are asked to commit to a minimum of a few hours twice a month over an initial three-month period.
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “This is an exciting time to get involved with the Museum of Watford as we reimagine how we share the town’s story with our communities. Our volunteers play a vital role in bringing history to life, and we’re looking for enthusiastic people who are passionate about making a difference. Whether you’re interested in culture, community engagement, or simply trying something new, we’d love to hear from you.”
The Museum of Watford is committed to accessibility and inclusion and encourages applications from people of all backgrounds. Adjustments and support are available to ensure everyone can take part.
