Appeal a council tax decision

You can submit an appeal if you disagree with any decision relating to:

  • the person we have made liable for paying the Council Tax Charge
  • discounts
  • exemptions
  • reductions for disabilities

How to appeal a decision

To submit an appeal you will need to contact us within three months of the decision stating the following:

  • your Council Tax reference number
  • the reasons that you disagree with the decision

Once we have received your appeal we will review it within one month. If we are not able to resolve your appeal we will refer it to the Valuation Tribunal to review the appeal and make a decision.

Valuation tribunal appeals

The Valuation Tribunal Service is an independent judicial body who can hear appeals about Council Tax or Business Rates decisions.

If your appeal is referred to them the tribunal will contact you to make arrangements for a hearing.

Please note it can take the Valuation Tribunal up to 9 months to make a decision from the date that they receive it. You will need to continue to pay your bill while you are waiting for the outcome of your appeal.
