Message from Returning Officer
On Thursday 7 May 2026, you decide who leads Watford as its elected Mayor. On the same day, voters in every ward will also choose their ward Councillor.
The Mayor is the elected leader of Watford Borough Council and its principal spokesperson and ambassador, championing the needs of residents and businesses across the town. Working with partners at county, regional and national level, the Mayor gives Watford a strong voice, working to secure the investment and opportunities our town needs for the future.
Why an elected Mayor is different
Unlike a Council Leader, who is chosen by Councillors, the residents of the borough directly elect the Mayor. Their manifesto goes on to help shape the strategic direction and priorities of the council. It is a full-time role, with a salary agreed by Full Council following recommendations made by an independent remuneration panel.
Why Watford has an elected Mayor
In 2001, Watford voted in favour of introducing an elected Mayor in a referendum. The first mayoral election took place in 2002 and subsequent elections have occurred every four years.
Local government reorganisation
Due to local government reorganisation, it is expected to be the final mayoral election for Watford Borough Council before the authority transitions to a new unitary authority in 2028. The elected Mayor will be in post only as long as Watford Borough Council exists - once we become part of a new unitary authority, there will not be an elected Mayor.
The Mayor elected in May 2026 will be crucial in guiding Watford through this transition, protecting essential services and ensuring the town is well-positioned for the new authority.
