Prevent and Radicilastion

Prevent and Radicalisation

Prevent is part of the UK's counter-terrorism strategy. It aims to reduce the threat of terrorism by stopping people from becoming involved in terrorism or supporting terrorist activity.

Prevent is a form of safeguarding that sits outside the criminal justice system. Its purpose is to identify and support people who may be vulnerable to radicalisation before they come to harm or commit an offence.

Prevent addresses all forms of terrorism and extremism, including:

  • Islamist extremism
  • Extreme right-wing extremism
  • Extreme left-wing extremism
  • Anarchist extremism
  • Single-issue extremism

What is Radicalisation?

Radicalisation is the process through which a person comes to support, legitimise or engage in extremist ideologies or terrorist activity.

Anyone can be vulnerable to radicalisation, regardless of their age, background, faith or circumstances.

What is Channel?

Channel is a voluntary and confidential safeguarding programme that provides support to people who may be vulnerable to being drawn into terrorism or extremist activity.

The programme works with a range of partners, including education, health, social care, local authorities and the police, to provide tailored support where appropriate.

Being referred to Channel does not mean a person has committed a crime. Channel is designed to provide early intervention and support to reduce the risk of radicalisation.
