How can I become a councillor?

How do I get elected?

Watford Borough Council elects in thirds. Councillors serve a four-year term. This means that every year a third of the councillors (or one from each ward) is re-elected. On the fourth year of the cycle there is a county council election.

Each political party selects candidates to stand in the wards, or sometimes independents stand. A councillor who has come to the end of their term may wish to stand again for another term of office or may stand down.

You will need to contact your local political party directly to discuss becoming a candidate if you wish to represent them.

The Electoral Commission website provides information about elections in England, including guidance for potential candidates. The elections office at the town hall can also be contacted for further information.
