To vote in any election or referendum you must be registered on the electoral register.

Register to vote on the GOV.UK website

After you're registered, you'll automatically receive a poll card for all elections and referendums you're eligible to vote in.

The poll card will be posted to you about 6 weeks before an election or referendum.

It contains voting information and the location of your polling station.

Please bring your poll card to the polling station on the day of voting.

Why you should register to vote

Registering to vote is the only way you can take part in elections and referendums.

Also:

  • you could be fined up to £80 if you don't respond to an invitation to register to vote
  • the register is used by credit reference agencies, so you may have difficulties getting a loan, mortgage or finance agreement if you're not registered
  • you'll also be able to apply to vote by post or proxy if you need to
