Watford businesses have teamed up to launch an iconic Watford statue exhibition and trail which captures the spirit of local well-known people and places...
Last year, a dozen lamppost banners were designed and produced locally before adoring Watford high street featuring famous faces from the local area including Anthony Joshua, Bradley Walsh, and Graham Taylor, whilst also recognising local hotspots such as Cassiobury Park, The Pond, Watford FC and more. The banners, funded by Watford BID, helped to brighten up the centre of Watford and enhance the look & feel of the town during the early months of the year.
The banners have now returned to Watford high street, but this year Watford businesses have also commissioned for those twelve banner designs to have a wonderful matching sculpture for each design – all created by young Hertfordshire-based artist Marco Caruse, who sheds some light on his creative process:
“Each project begins as a sketch and is then fleshed out using clay, paint, and other materials plus odd bits and pieces I have stumbled across. Each piece is placed in an environment I have built, which helps to createand breathe life into the miniature world these little characters live in. My aim is to take the mundane and sculpt it with an unconventional twist.”
The sculptures will be displayed in a unique art exhibition style in the intu Watford shopping centre from Friday 21st – Sunday 23rd February, located on lower mall next to Phase Eight. The exhibition will proudly display Marco’s work and showcase iconic Watford places, where you can see the mini statues first-hand and even vote for your favourite.
As well as recognising local talent, people, and places which make Watford town centre the unique place it is, Watford BID will also be launching a family-friendly iconic statue trail involving both the wonderful banners and the matching statues. From 25th February to the 25th May 2020 the sculptures will be moved from the exhibition and displayed throughout the town in Watford shops. Your task along with your team of statue-hunters will be to use clues in order to locate and name which shops the statues can be found in.
The Watford iconic statue trail is free to play, and can either be played by grabbing a map at the exhibition, or by downloading our very own interactive App. Details on how to download and play the App can be found by visiting www.watfordbid.co.uk. Those who manage to locate all the statues will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Watford Gift Card, which can be spent in over 30 shops, restaurants, pubs, and more throughout Watford town centre.
Celebrate what makes Watford town centre unique, witness fantastic local artwork, and join in the family-fun trail to keep the kids entertained whilst also discovering your local town centre over the coming weeks and months!
