The opening day was attended by the Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor on 17 February – the 96th anniversary of the club.

The club helped to plant more trees this winter in Cassiobury Park, as part of the Rotary Club’s project where every member plants at least one tree each to change the environment for the better. It is part of their environmental projects to improve the lives of others in the local community and around the world.

Oak, silver birch, grey alder, field maple, ild cherry and hawthorn were planted, adding to what was planted in previous years. To ensure the trees have the best conditions to grow, the earth was rotovated to remove compaction and mulch will be added to help with drainage. In addition, a large mound of earth was regraded and lowered to make the area look more attractive.

Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: “I would like to thank Watford Rotary Club for their dedication to such an important cause. The council is working hard with local community groups, businesses and Veolia to make our parks and green spaces even better. This will include setting ambitious targets to increase the number of trees locally, as well as improving the health of trees in Watford for the benefit of future generations. I am determined to make Watford a greener place to live and work.”

To promote conservation and sustainable management, the Tree and Woodland Strategy aims to improve the protection and enhancement of Watford’s trees, woodlands and hedgerows. Every tree planted helps us to increase the tree canopy cover in Watford, which is currently 18.2%, above the national average of 16%. This helps to support biodiversity, and improve the soil, climate and environment.
