On Thursday 26 September during Recycle Week (23 to 29 September), Watford residents are invited to sustainably refresh their wardrobe, by trading clothes they no longer wear at the clothes swap being held at The Pump House Theatre.

An incredible 38 million items are bought in the UK each year, 11 million of which end up in landfill*. The clothes swap organised by Watford Borough Council in partnership with Veolia and WasteAware, is designed to help prevent textile waste by providing people with an alternative to disposal, for the quality items they don’t wear.

Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: “I’m determined to make Watford a more sustainable town. With textiles being one of the fastest growing sources of waste in the world, it’s important that we work together to tackle this. Not only are events like this good for the environment, but also good for your bank balance too! Do come along and give your clothes a new lease of life.”

Darren Harding, Senior Contracts Manager for Veolia said:  "By taking steps to reuse and recycle items before throwing them away, we’re not only preserving resources and saving money, but we’re building a more sustainable community. We’re proud to support the clothes swap and hope to see many Watford residents updating their wardrobe on the day.”

Participants can drop off up to 10 good quality items of clothing, shoes, and accessories to the Pump House Theatre on Thursday 26 September from 5pm to 6pm (last drop-off time). One token will be given in exchange for each item. Participants will then be able to come back to the Pump House Theatre and use the token to ‘purchase’ an item between 6.30pm and 7.30pm on the same evening.

At the event, locals will be given information about sustainable textiles habits and will have access to a clothes swap kit for free, if they want to host their own clothes swap event. The kit includes:

  • Clothes hangers for an assortment of trousers and tops (260)
  • One free standing mirror
  • One clothes rail (6ft x 5ft)
  • Textile repair cards i.e. How to sew on a button, How to take up a hem
