Five young sisters showed their commitment to responsible dog ownership at an event by the Dogs Trust and Watford Borough Council – where they gave £135 to charity.
The Alden sisters stopped by to say hello to the team at Watford’s Green Flag award-winning Cassiobury Park on Saturday. Martha, five, Rosie, 10, Daisy, 13 and Molly, eight, who live nearby, gave £135 to the Dogs Trust, which they had raised through neighbourhood cake sales and whatnot. Their five-month-old cockapoo Sparky came along to enjoy the little doggy obstacle course that was on offer at the event.
Other guests included Russell and Lucy Malone and their daughter Amy, nine, from west Watford, who were with their dogs Malone the pug and Molly the golden retriever. Sheila Brant came along with her pet Lady, a two-year-old Cavalier King Charles who received lots of treats in return for taking on the Dogs Trust’s obstacle course.
While dog fouling is not a major issue in Watford, Watford Borough Council understands that it is a concern for residents. The council received the feedback that not many people realise dog waste can be disposed of in black bags with their ordinary household rubbish. It can also be thrown into any public litter bin. The news comes as people have been nominating places where they would like the council to focus its resources on tackling dog fouling. This will include offering advice to dog-owners and issuing fixed penalty notices in the areas that receive the most votes later this summer. Residents can email email@example.com, ring 01923 278503 or get in touch with us via our Love Watford Facebook or @WatfordCouncil Twitter pages if you would like to provide feedback.
Elected Mayor of Watford Dorothy Thornhill said: “Most dog owners are great at doing their bit to keep our town tidy and we’re hoping that this will make our town even nicer than it already is. We have some of the best parks, streets and open spaces in Hertfordshire, and we want to maintain their outstanding reputation so that people continue to visit and enjoy them.”
