Watford Borough Council has appointed Murrill Construction Ltd to deliver its improvement works to the main visitor car park at Cassiobury, providing improved parking facilities with increased capacity to support the growing number of visitors.
This follows the recent installations of new drainage in the car park to ensure a greater level of floor protection and protection of the water course. The works started on 25 February and will continue until 18 April. Whilst the main car park will not be operational through-out this period, temporary parking facilities will be available inside the park next to the car park entrance, with 40 spaces available.
Green Flag award-winning Cassiobury Park was voted one of the top 10 parks in the UK for a third year running. To support the growing number of visitors (2million+ per annum), the refurbishment will include new footways, planting and better drainage and a totally new surface across the car park.
The capacity of the car park is increasing from 88 to 214 permanent spaces, with Blue Badge spaces also increasing from 6 to 12. To deter drivers from travelling toward the car park if there is limited capacity, new digital screens will also be installed to highlight the number of available spaces.
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor said: “I often speak to residents who have not been able to find a space in the car park at Cassiobury Park. With a record number of visitors to the park last year, I am pleased that we are going to extended and improve the car park to make it easier for visitors and take the pressure off neighbouring roads. We will also be doubling the number of disabled parking bays and putting in electric vehicle charging points. However, I do appreciate in the short term that there will be disruption for residents whilst work on this takes place. I'd like to thank residents for their patience and hope they appreciate it when it is finished in time for the busy summer months.”
With the temporary decrease in car parking spaces, residents are being encouraged to take other modes of transport to Cassiobury Park, especially at weekends when the car park is normally full. We recommend using one of our town centre car parks (www.watford.gov.uk/carparks) - or better still, you can ditch the car and take the train or cycle in, so you can spend more time enjoying the beautiful park and less time cooped up in your car.
