The jewel in Watford's crown - Cassiobury Park managed by Watford Borough Council and Veolia - has had an overwhelmingly successful year, receiving five accolades, including winning the prestigious Landscape Institute (LI) Awards.
An amazing beauty spot with an enormous amount of history behind it, Cassiobury Park goers are guaranteed to have a great day out in this fantastic Green Flag award-winning park. This year saw it being voted one of the top 10 parks in the UK for a third year running, with its packed programme of activities all year round and fantastic facilities making it a firm favourite.
Although Cassiobury Park has received nationwide recognition this year, in June 2014, it was recognised that many of the facilities in Cassiobury Park needed updating and £6m of funding (£5m from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund, and £1.6m from the council) was awarded to carry out the restoration.
The regeneration of Cassiobury Park - led by Watford Borough Council - included the restoration of Watford’s 104-year-old bandstand, refurbished paddling pools and construction of the multi-award-winning hub building. The restoration project won the Heritage and Conservation category at the prestigious Landscape Institute (LI) Awards 2018, celebrating landscape led projects across the world. The project has enabled people who live, work and visit Watford to reconnect with their past and their local environment by creating a walk back in time.
Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: “I’m proud that the Cassiobury has been recognised once again, in what’s been an incredible year for the park. The restoration project has helped restored the park and the work has made a real difference in improving the landscape and the facilities for the over one million visitors it welcomes every year. The fantastic park hub building and paddling pools got a record breaking number of visitors this year. The park really is one of the jewels in Watford’s crown.”
The Cassiobury Hub - built thanks to a major regeneration project led by Watford Borough Council – then won the Most Sustainable Construction Award and Project of the Year Award at this year’s Hertfordshire Building Futures Awards, which celebrates schemes at the forefront of sustainable design and construction. It also won the Best Parks Restoration/Development Project at the Horticulture Week Custodian Awards.
Recognising outstanding architecture, planning and design in the built environment, Cassiobury Park has also been shortlisted as a finalist at the Civic Trust Awards, which reward projects that offer a positive cultural, social, economic or environmental benefit to their local communities.
If you haven’t already this Christmas, make sure you enjoy a nice brisk walk through the park and facilities on offer. There’s no better way to walk off all those mince pies! To find out more about the packed programme of activities all year round and, please visit watford.gov.uk/cassioburypark
