New disabled parking bays enhance town-centre accessibility in Watford

St marys church and church street

Watford Borough Council is proud to announce the introduction of five new on-street disabled parking bays along Church Street and an additional three bays on George Street...

These additions are part of the council's ongoing commitment to improving accessibility and supporting the needs of disabled individuals within the community, as well due to the increasing demand for accessible parking spaces in the area.

The newly installed parking bays feature accessibility enhancements, including wider spaces to accommodate wheelchair users and those with mobility aids, ensuring greater ease of access.

Accessible parking plays a crucial role in facilitating the mobility and independence of individuals with disabilities. By providing designated spaces closer to key locations such as the town centre, the council aims to make it easier for disabled residents and visitors to access essential services, businesses, and amenities in these areas.

Mayor in town centre

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “We can’t forget the challenges faced by disabled residents and visitors in finding suitable parking in our town to access Watford’s bustling high street. We are taking measures to address this issue, and these on-street disabled parking bays will make our town centre even more accessible.”

Cllr Ian Stotesbury, Portfolio Holder for Transport and Sustainability, said: “This idea, driven by our passion for equality, ensures that disabled individuals have equal opportunities to participate in community life. People with mobility limits suffer daily from feeling excluded. Now, we can give them a boost to their routines, which will be a massive help for people.”

The works also form part of the council's phased improvement plan for various locations across the town, including King Street, Market Street, St Albans Road, Clarendon Road, and the Town Centre. Additionally, there will be a program of improvements for smaller parades across Watford.
