Travelling Tales invites all residents of Watford to embark on a free immersive and interactive heritage tour of the River Colne, diving into the rich history and significance of the river’s development in the town.

Supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, with thanks to the National Lottery players, as part of our three-year Tales of the River project, these free sessions aim to engage and educate the community about the historical importance of the river.

Travelling Tales - a collaboration between Watford Council, Watford Museum and Groundwork East - will take participants on a captivating journey through time, narrating the Colne’s historical highlights whilst providing sensory items for the audience to touch and smell.

The Travelling Tales tour, which lasts approximately 60 minutes, caters to a diverse range of age groups and audiences. There will be talks where participants can learn about the Pleasure Boat Station at Wiggenhall and activities such as weaving, using similar techniques to the silk mills once found in Watford and boat making.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “We are excited to bring these fantastic Travelling Tales sessions to the community and share the rich heritage of the River Colne. Through these sessions, audiences will be taken through the captivating history of the river and its vital role in Watford over the years.  This project is part of our “Tales of the River’ project, which will bring the River Colne’s history to life and encourage residents to protect its future.”
