Another important step has been reached in the creation of the Watford Health Campus with the government approval of the scheme’s CPO (Compulsory Purchase Order).
CPOs are often used by local authorities to bring together all the land needed to deliver significant regeneration projects like the Health Campus and confirm that it can be included in the development. Whilst most of the Campus land belongs to the council, the CPO has dealt with some of the small patches of land across the site where ownership was not so clear.
In approving the Health Campus CPO, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government recognises that the Health Campus will make a significant contribution to improving the ‘economic, social and environmental wellbeing of the area’.
The benefits the Secretary of State notes in his decision include the new homes that will be delivered, which will include affordable housing and the improvements to the local environment such as cleaning up contaminated land and reducing flood risks in the area.
He also noted that scheme’s location right next to Watford Hospital means it offers a once in a lifetime opportunity for future development on the hospital site.
Elected Mayor Dorothy Thornhill said; “The decision to grant the CPO means marks another milestone on this journey which will help us to regenerate west Watford, and provide much needed homes and jobs for our residents”
