Visitors to Riverside Recreation Ground are in for a treat, as the council has just installed a new play area, an adult gym, a multi-use games court and picnic benches.
The works cost £300k and was paid for by contributions that developers have to make when they build new homes in the town. The area has been completely transformed and landscaped with lots of wildflowers to encourage bees and biodiversity.
The toddler play area now features some great new swings, see-saws and rocking chairs, a new climbing net and slide. Children will enjoy chasing the crocodiles and sharks painted on the safety flooring.
Prior to Southern Landscape & Construction doing the works, residents were asked their views and were able to comment and make suggestions.
Elected Mayor Dorothy Thornhill said: “We were keen to make this area more suitable for children of all ages – we took away a few things like the pod, and derelict skate park, that had been attracting anti-social behaviour, and put in lots of great new features. It’s now much brighter and family friendly.”
