Great Big Green Week is coming to Watford this September, to help inspire the public to make positive changes for the planet.

Held between 18-26 September, Great Big Green Week is a national campaign that features a range of exciting events – all aimed at informing residents about the many simple changes that can help them to live more sustainably and fight climate change. Such events include The Great Big Green Litter Pick, free Beryl Bike trips, a Love Your Leftovers webinar (partnered with Veolia), enchanting nature tours, volunteering opportunities and more.

The week has been organised by Friends of the Earth Watford, together with Watford Borough Council and Three Rivers District Council. We will also be creating and distributing a green-living booklet – jam-packed with hints, tips and advice on how to live in a more eco-friendly manner.

With extreme weather events and unprecedented temperatures becoming more common, it’s more important than ever that we learn how to live more sustainably. That’s why Watford Borough Council has pledged to reach carbon-net-zero by 2030, and we’re working hard to make those goals a reality.

Great Big Green Week is just one of the ways that we’re working hard to reach these goals. Others include our Transforming Travel in Watford strategy, raising awareness of climate change ahead of COP26 this November, or restoring our natural green spaces.

Elected mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said “Watford has long been committed to fighting climate change and preserving the town’s rich biodiversity and stunning natural spaces. We’re so proud to be taking part in this year’s Great Big Green Week, which highlights the vital importance of our ecosystems and the role that the town plays in giving the world a greener, healthier and more sustainable future.”

Councillor Ian Stotesbury, portfolio holder for Transport and Sustainability said, “Great Big Green Week is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the huge and growing range of local sustainable groups, shops, charities and activities. We must come together to learn to tackle climate change - and in doing so make our lives more active, healthy and sustainable. Thanks to everyone getting involved this year - we hope to grow this year on year!”
