In a bid to reduce emissions and lead the way towards carbon neutrality, Watford Borough Council will soon be acquiring four new electric vehicles as part of the town’s cleaning operations.

The new additions include three new electric cage tippers and one new electric sweeper. There are a number of ways that these electric vehicles are superior in terms of environmental impact – including improved air quality, reduced noise pollution and fewer carbon dioxide emissions.

Switching to these new cage tippers will, over their five-year vehicle lifespan, save £19,000 in fuel and reduce carbon emissions by 3,180 g/km in. The new electric sweeper will save over £700 and 985 g/km of carbon emissions over five years. The new vehicles, which will arrive in spring/autumn respectively, are just one part of the council’s pledge to be net-zero carbon by 2030. Having declared a climate emergency back in July 2019, these new vehicles are just one of the many ways we’re working to make Watford a greener, more environmentally-friendly town.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said “Small changes make a big difference when it comes to tackling climate change, with electric vehicles playing a big part in helping us achieve carbon net-zero. Not only are we working at moving towards more green vehicles within the council and its services, but Watford actually boasts over half of all the personal electric vehicles in Hertfordshire, with more than 40 charging stations dotted around town.”

Darren Harding, Senior Contract Manager at Veolia, said “We are thrilled to be launching this suite of new electric vehicles which will help our dedicated Streets and Parks teams to carry out their work efficiently and sustainably. We are proud to support our partner Watford Borough Council on its journey to net zero."
