Watford Borough Council, in conjunction with Groundwork East and Watford Museum, held the public launch of the River Colne Art Exhibition on 11 February, displaying the beautiful depictions of the river that were submitted from artists over the last few months.

The exhibition began on 5 February, and will run until 26 March. Part of the Rediscovering the River Colne project, the launch was a great opportunity to welcome people to the museum, and for entrants to discuss what inspired them to create their works – with some citing their lockdown walks and childhood memories of picnicking by the river as sources of inspiration. The submissions came in a range of mediums, including photography, paintings and drawings, all hung proudly on the walls for all visitors to enjoy.

Local councillors, Elected Mayor of Watford Mayor Peter Taylor and other members of the Watford community were able to congratulate the entrants and discuss their amazing work. The event was a great success, with over 50 people coming to enjoy more than 30 pieces of work – some of which were created by local community groups and colleges. The competition was open to any ability and age, encouraging entrants to use various art forms to highlight the beauty of the river and its surrounding wildlife.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor was also present at the event and said, “It was fantastic to see the beautiful artwork inspired by people’s love of the River Colne. The memories shared by entrants and the local residents who attended the launch further highlighted the importance of restoring, protecting the River Colne so people can enjoy it for years to come and make their own memories.”

The River Colne Art Exhibition will be available to view until 26 March 2022. For more information on the project, please visit www.rivercolnewatford.co.uk
