Homelessness in Watford

Discover how your spare change changes lives

Film one

Film two

Watford Borough Council has launched a new campaign to show how donations to homelessness charities can change lives. Two short films talk about why donating directly to local charities rather than people on the street can have a bigger impact.

Background

The films, which have been developed with the expert knowledge of New Hope, show how donations to this charity and others can really change lives. To be sensitive to vulnerable people going through homelessness, an actress is used in the films to portray the real-life story of someone recently helped by New Hope.

Film one

The first film focuses on a character, portrayed by an actress who directly interacts with the camera as if it was a real person. She engages us and asks for help. The film ends with a teaser leading to film two, which centres around council funded homelessness charity New Hope and the work they do to help those experiencing homelessness in our town.

Funding

The funding for these films came from the Hertfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner’s Action Fund which uses the Proceeds of Crime to help make communities safer. The films are supported by Safer Watford, which is chaired by Watford Borough Council whose role is to work with partners to take a strategic and holistic view of all community safety matters.

Partners

Watford Borough Council worked with local homelessness charity New Hope and used their expertise to form the message. We would also like to acknowledge Film company Think About It films, who thoughtfully and impactively told the story on screen.

Participating organisations include New Hope, GROW, Job Centre Plus, Herts Young Homeless, CGL Spectrum, Health Inclusion Matters, Citizens Advice Watford, OneYMCA Watford, Watford Community Housing, Hertfordshire County Council, Aldwyck Housing, Hightown Housing Assocation, Hertfordshire Partnership University Foundation Trust, and representatives from the council’s Housing, Anti-Social Behaviour and Benefits and Revenues teams.
