The way that we treat empty property has changed from 1 April 2013 so that no reduction is given on the following types of property:
- Property that is empty and unfurnished and needs structural work to make it habitable
- Property that is empty and unfurnished and is no-one's "sole-or-main residence"
- A property that is classed as someone's second home
In addition, if a property has been empty for more than two years, a premium of an additional 50% Council Tax will now be charged.
If you currently receive a discount under one of the circumstances mentioned above and your circumstances change, you must notify the council immediately.
